Chicago Vigil
Honoring Their Light…A Vigil for Lost Promise
Too many lives, which held so much promise, have been lost to drugs.
Too many dreams and potential, never realized. Our hopes for them
dashed…and our worst fears for them came true. Their flames were snuffed
out well before their time.
Who would they have become? What would they have contributed to our
world-a world which is so less rich because their talents vanished
from our midst. Their promise lost-the athlete, the actress, the budding
star, the little brother or sister…the young adult looking forward
to the promise life held…and the adult who couldn't face the future.
Our duty now is to honor the light of their promise—and who they should
have been—so that not another light is dimmed. Those left behind,
who feel their loss each day—friends and families, parents and siblings,
grandparents and cousins—they tell us that if it happened to
them, it can happen to anyone.
Stepping forward, to honor the light of friends and loved ones lost
to drugs, are Chicago area residents, from all walks of life and every
part of Chicago's neighborhoods and suburbs. Each representing a drug
abuse prevention organization with the goal to honor their light.
An effort started a year ago in Washington, continues in Chicago.
A sharing of stories and a commitment to carry on their promise. Opening
our nation's eyes to the consequences of drug abuse. A vigil for lost
promise…as showcased at Navy Pier's Target Chicago, in association
with Target America, a national traveling exhibit.
